Amongst other assets on Teesside, Sabic own and operate the Olefeins 6 processing plant, commonly referred to as the “Cracker”, which is the second largest in Europe, and produces 710Kte of ethylene per annum.
During the Spring of 2013 Gauged Solutions were approached by the Maintenance Services Group (MSG) of Sabic Teesside, to help them develop a new behavioural approach to safety.
They had a system of audit in place but it was not really addressing behavioural issues in the workplace. In addition, the existing workplace evaluation process did not focus on the many excellent aspect of site behaviours, and leant more towards the negatives and failings the business was experiencing.
Workshops and half day training sessions were introduced collaboratively between Gauged Solutions and the Management team from Sabics’s MSG operation. These had a huge impact on the business and people within it, including both the contracting fraternity and the Sabic workforce, all whom worked for the MSG.
The success of these half day workshops gave the management team the confidence to re-evaluate and modify some of the existing processes that were in place at that time. Gauged Solutions worked with some of the key management team from Sabic to develop a process entitled “Talking about Care”, (TAC). This new leadership intervention tool enabled and empowered all those in a formalised leadership position to frequently visit the workplace and engage with the workforce in a very informal manner, having detailed positive discussion about the ways and methods of work that were being adopted. The training focused on a number of key areas:
The success of the TAC programme was such that it is now used site wide and is implemented at other Sabic facilities.
